My Daily Cleaning Routine

10 / 23 / 171 / 3 / 18

IMG_9244

My cleaning routine. If only I had a pound for every time I’ve been asked to share this with you! This post is all about my daily cleaning routine, not my deep cleaning which I tend to do once a week and I will detail that in a further post – keep your eyes peeled!

Cleaning is a dirty job. There’s not many of us who enjoy it. I think of it like dieting. It’s not particularly enjoyable, but the benefits are thoroughly rewarding. And the more you do, the more you want to maintain.  I wouldn’t say I particularly enjoy cleaning, but I do find it therapeutic if I’m worried or stressed. Which is often, perhaps that’s why my house is so clean!

As documented in my tidy home post (link) I always aim to go to bed with a clean and tidy house. Tidying and cleaning are very different for me. If my home isn’t tidy, I don’t have the motivation to clean. It’s important to have a relatively tidy home before you start to think about cleaning. You can’t wipe down your work surfaces if they’re cluttered with dishes.

Despite my home being lovely and clean first thing in the morning, the chaos of getting Sofia and Leo dressed, fed and watered in the morning turns my neat, sparkling house upside down. All in the space of an hour! After dropping Sofia off at school, it’s home to get some breakfast and tidy up the aftermath.

The first thing I do in the morning is open the blinds and windows. I can’t bear having these closed during the day, even in winter. I want my home to be bright and I love fresh air. Next, I switch on my electric wax melts to fill the house with fragrance. I use Scentsy. I change the melts every couple of days. It’s so easy to do, I simply pop a knife around the edge and out it comes ready for a fresh scent.

IMG_9219

After scraping the coco pops off the table and sweeping the grated cheese off the floor, I load the dishwasher. It looks like I’ve fed an army instead of two young children. When my work surfaces and kitchen table is clear, I then spray them down and wipe clean. I always dry them after with kitchen roll so I’m not left with water marks.

IMG_9222

Then I’ll tackle the hob if I’ve not cleaned it thoroughly after dinner. I usually spray on some Zoflora, leave for a moment and then wipe clean with a kitchen sponge. When it’s clean I then buff it up to a shine. I love to use window/glass cleaner with an e-cloth (LINK). If I’m really going to town, I’ll buff it up with a smidgen of baby oil and a soft slightly damp household cloth.

IMG_9221

The next big job in the post breakfast kitchen is to sweep the floors. Generally I use my cordless shark (Link) You can save 10% off using PINKPEONYON10 however soggy cereal and cheese is definitely a brush job! I then mop my floors with my JML Whizz Mop (Link) and the kitchen and hallway is done. These are the first areas of the house you see when entering and I like to tackle these first.

IMG_9218

IMG_9217

I’ve usually loaded the clothes horse before bed and they’ll generally be dry and ready to be folded away or ironed. I pile them into a basket to deal with later. I always iron in the evenings when the kids aren’t around. I watch some TV or YouTube to make it less tedious.

Next, I give the kid’s bedrooms a quick blitz. Firstly, I open their curtains and windows,  tidy their toys and books away, make their beds, switch on their scentsy warmers and give the carpets a quick vacuum. I quickly go over their surfaces such as desks, radiator covers and shelves with a cleaning wipe. I love the ASDA floor wipes. They are just huge wipes saturated in an apple scented cleaning solution which smells delicious.

IMG_9215

IMG_9245

IMG_9214

Lastly in the morning, I give the living room a quick once over. It’s usually still tidy from the night before but I like to fluff the cushions and fold the blankets. If we’re staying at home that day (which is rare) Leo will bring some boxes of toys downstairs and spend time playing until it’s time for lunch.

After lunch I tend to give the kitchen another clean to prepare for cooking dinner. If we do arts and crafts I lay a huge plastic mat down to minimise the mess. You can even buy party table covers and cut them down! I always have wipes nearby too.

We then pick Sofia up from school and I tend to try and prepare dinner whilst they are playing upstairs. I try to tidy as I go, binning vegetable peelings straight away, wiping work surfaces whilst dinner is in the oven and load the dishwasher.

The post dinner mess is the worst of the day but my husband and I share the load. We take turns bathing the kids whilst the other blitzes the kitchen once again and then I give all the rooms a quick vacuum with my Shark (LINK) You can save 10% off using PINKPEONYON10. You may think vacuuming every day is excessive, but if I don’t I’m left with crumbs everywhere! It just makes me feel better and it’s good exercise – especially if you have a three floors like me.

IMG_9213

The last thing I do before I sit down in the evening is pop some Zoflora and boiling water in the sink. The scent fills the entire house. At the moment I’m loving Bluebell Woods.

IMG_9220

Little and often is key. My house would be in chaos if I left all of my cleaning until the end of the day. If you make cleaning a routine, you’ll becoming quicker and more efficient.

I hope that gives you a little insight and feel free to share any tips you have below.

Happy cleaning!

Our favourite family meals and recipes

10 / 15 / 171 / 3 / 18

FullSizeRender - Copy (23)

Food glorious food! One of my favourite things in life. I’ll never understand people who say that they’ve been so busy they’ve forgotten to eat. I’m already planning dinner whilst I’m munching on my Weetabix! I’ll happily spend hours in the kitchen cooking a roast, all for it to be devoured in ten minutes by my family. It brings me such joy.

I love to experiment with new recipes, but I have firm favourites that are always a success and leave us all feeling full and satisfied.

I’m not one for calorie counting really. If I eat eggs (keeps you full for hours) for breakfast and a light (ish) lunch, then as long as my evening meal is homemade from scratch, I feel healthy no matter what it is. Even my lasagne is packed with hidden veg (the kids will never know).

Pre-prepared and frozen meals of course have a place in my life. I’m not going to pretend that I never reach for Pizza or fish fingers because I have two children under the age of 6 who frequently have their little friends round for tea! There’s no way I could master the perfect béchamel whilst making sure Leo isn’t drawing on the wall! I plan my meals wisely. For example, for days that I’m working I’ll ensure I’ve made something like Bolognese the night before. Not only does it taste so much better the next day, but it’s so easy to make enough portions to last you at least two nights. If the meal requires a lot of chopping and preparation, I try to do it during the day when Leo is busy with his play-doh. With a little bit of forward planning, its achievable. And once you’ve made your own cottage pie, you’ll never want to buy a frozen one again.

I have lots of delicious recipes that I only make for my husband and I such as Chilli Con Carne, Cajun chicken pasta and Chicken Katsu Curry. I’ll maybe save those ones for another blog post! This one is all about the family meals that you can all enjoy together!
These recipes feed all four of us easily. Many last for two nights

Chicken and Asparagus Pasta (You all went nuts for this one!)

FullSizeRender - Copy (22)
Dice two large chicken breasts
Sprinkle a little thyme and season with salt and pepper.
Fry until brown
Meanwhile boil your pasta, I like to use Farfalle
Add two minced garlic cloves to the chicken and add a packet of chopped asparagus spears. You can also throw in some frozen peas too!
Add a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard and a Knorr chicken jelly stock cube and stir until melted
Add 300 mls of chicken stock (Knorr cube) and allow to simmer and bubble for 5-7 minutes until reduced a little.
Add around 150mls of HALF FAT crème fraiche (full fat doesn’t taste as good) or more depending on how thick you want it the sauce. Let this bubble and simmer until the sauce is a nice consistency, usually 6-8 minutes. You can add a little cornflour if it’s too thin. You can also add a heaped tablespoon of Parmesan if you like!
When you’re happy with your sauce, drain and add your al dente pasta and mix well. Season with a little salt and pepper to taste.

Lasagne (And spaghetti bolognese)

FullSizeRender - Copy (21)

Dice an onion, add a little salt (it absorbs the water) and fry in a deep casserole dish until brown.
Add three large minced garlic cloves
Add 1000g of low fat mince and fry until brown
Add 2 teaspoons of thyme, basil and oregano
Add a tablespoon of tomato puree
Add a few drops of Worcester sauce
Now grate three large carrots and two celery stalks until finely minced and add to the mixture.
Add 300mls of hot beef stock
Add 1 ½ cartons of passata
Add a tablespoon of sugar (This neutralises the acidity of the tomatoes)
Now let is simmer for around 90 mins until the liquid is reduced and thick. It should be darker in colour.
At this point you’ve got your perfect Bolognese. Boil some pasta and you’re done! It’s insanely delicious after being stored in the fridge overnight.
Next have either two lasagne dishes ready or one large (This will easily feed a family of four twice). Spread a little butter all around the base to stop your pasta sticking.
Now place one layer of cooked lasagne sheets in the bottom. Now add a layer of Bolognese, repeat (lasagne sheet – bolognese, repeat again!)
Now it’s time to spread your béchamel sauce on top. I confess to using a jar for this!
Now add a generous amount of grated cheddar cheese on top and top with some black pepper.
Place in the over at around 180 degrees and cook until crispy on top. Usually 20-30 minutes.

Tip – If you serve this straight from the oven it won’t hold its shape and will look like slop. Leave it to cool down before serving or better still, serve the next day!

Cottage pie

Peel and boil some king Edward potatoes. Enough to make two pies worth of mash!
Dice an onion, add a pinch of salt and fry in a casserole dish until browned.
Add two large diced garlic cloves and fry for a further two minutes.
Add 1000g of low fat beef mince (Or lamb if you fancy a Shepherd’s pie)
When the mince loses some of its juices, add a tablespoon of flour to scoop it up. This will thicken your gravy
Add two teaspoons of thyme and rosemary.
Add a tablespoon of tomato puree                                                                                              Add a few drops of Worcester sauce
Add around 500ml hot beef stock (or lamb stock)
Add a tablespoon of Bisto Best beef gravy granules
Add 2 chopped carrots, and half a chopped swede
Simmer for around 45 mins until it has a lovely thick gravy.
Now add your mince and gravy to two pie dishes or one large and allow to COOL. If the mince is hot, your mash will sink right into it. Give it as least 30 minutes.
When cooled, add a generous helping of mashed potato (make sure it’s seasoned) on top. Smooth down with a fork to create some lovely little tracks.
Now add some grated cheese to the top of the mash
Pop in the oven for around 20 minutes or until the mash is crispy on top.

Tip – On the second night your mince will be drier and you may need to make need to make some gravy.

Creamy chicken pasta bake

Chop two leeks and fry with some salt and pepper until tender
Add two large minced garlic cloves
Add two diced chicken breasts, season, add a chicken Knorr jelly stock cube and fry until browned
Add one teaspoon of thyme, rosemary and a pinch of parsley
Now pour in 800ml of hot chicken stock and cover with a lid for 30 minutes
After thirty minutes grab a slotted spoon and transfer the contents to a plate leaving only the juice. Allow it to reduce for a further ten minutes.
Meanwhile boil your pasta of choice.
Now make a roux in a bowl of one tablespoon of flour and one tablespoon of butter. Mix to create a paste and whisk into the sauce.
When dissolved add a big dollop of half fat crème fraiche
Now add one cup of grated cheddar cheese.

Now add your contents back in and mix well. Use the slotted spoon again to transfer into a large lasagne dish leaving the sauce in the pot for the pasta.
Now add your al dente pasta to the sauce, mix well and add to the top lasagne dish.
Grate some more cheddar cheese over the top, black pepper and place in the preheated oven at 180 degrees until crispy. Usually around 20 minutes.
I usually serve this with green beans and garlic bread!

Tip – If you wish to make a delicious warming chicken pie, follow the recipe exactly (minus the pasta) and add diced carrots at the start with the chicken, place all in a pie dish and cover with some puff or shortcrust pastry, brush over with some egg yolk and place in oven following pastry instructions.

Winter warming beef stew

Buy around 750g of stewing beef. You need a tougher cut of beef as it needs to slowly cook for hours to be tender, tasty and delicious!
If you can, do this step the night before – Add a tablespoon of thyme and rosemary to the beef. Add some salt and pepper and now coat the beef in flour. Get stuck right in with your hands, ensuring all the meat is coated (This is what will make your sauce thick) Cover with cling film and leave in fridge.
Fry and onion, add a pinch of salt in a casserole dish and fry until browned. Add two minced garlic cloves and fry for two minutes. Now add your meat and make sure all the herbs and flour go in to!
Fry until your meat is brown.
Add a Knorr beef jelly stock cube.
Now add a packet of baby carrots, half of a swede (or turnip!) and mix well.
Add a 1 1/2 tablespoon of tomato puree.
Now add enough hot beef stock (from a Knorr cube) to cover all the contents in the dish.
Season and put the lid on and transfer to a preheated oven at around 170 degrees.
Meanwhile make your mashed potatoes
Leave in the oven until at least 2-3 hours. I mix it every 30-40 minutes.
Around 30 minutes before my stew is ready, add a diced butternut squash.
Your meat is cooked when the largest part of meat breaks up when mashed effortlessly with a fork.
Serve with creamy mashed potatoes!

Tip – You can easily make this into a steak pie by placing into a pie dish and top with puff pastry, brush on egg yolk and follow pastry instructions in oven.

Carrot and Coriander Soup

FullSizeRender - Copy (20)
Chop and fry an onion with some salt and pepper for 5 minutes in a large soup pot
Add two minced garlic cloves and fry for one minute
Add one large chopped potato
Add 6 large chopped carrots
Add a tablespoon of ground coriander
Add a teaspoon of coriander leaf
Mix well!
Add a few drops of Worcestershire sauce
Add a chicken jelly stock cube and mix
Add 700mls of hot chicken stock from a Knorr cube
Add another 700mls of hot vegetable stock from a cube
Cover and simmer for 30 minutes until all contents are soft and ready to puree
Now puree until the soup is completely smooth. I use a handheld blender
Add a big dollop of half fat crème fraiche
Give it a good whisk
Now serve with crusty buttered bread and enjoy!

Chicken fajitas

FullSizeRender - Copy (19)
I have just recently perfected my chicken fajitas and they are incredible (if I do say so myself)
Firstly, make you own fajita spice mix! You can of course by some premade but I love to make my own and it’s very easy. Grab a bowl and add a tablespoon of each spice – Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cumin, turmeric, a pinch of salt and pepper and a Teaspoon of mild chilli powder. Set aside
Now I have two frying pans. I add sliced onion and three colours of peppers to one and my chicken to the other. I add my spices to both equally and fry. Make sure your chicken is lovely and brown.
You may not need all your spices, add gradually to suit your taste.
Now for the magic part, just as your spices are becoming dry and a little clumped in the dish, I add some water. This soaks up all those spices and flavour and creates the most amazing juices to keep your meat moist and full of flavour.
Serve with warm wraps, some Mexican rice, grated cheese, salsa and chips! I like mayonnaise on mine.

The above photo also has some delicious fillet steak fajitas!

Tip – Have a premade fajita spice mix nearby in case you need a dash more spice!

Tip – I make the kids chicken separately adding only a tiny pinch of spice

If you recreate any of these recipes I’d love for you to tag me on Instagram and let me know your thoughts. What are you waiting for? Ready, steady…..Cook!

My top beauty products for busy mums

10 / 11 / 171 / 3 / 18

thumbnail_image12.jpg

I confess, I’m a beauty product addict. Ever since I bought my first Rimmel lipstick at aged 13, I was hooked. It was a dashing frosty number and I proudly kept the shiny purple plastic bullet in my handbag. I felt very grown up indeed. Luckily over the years, I’ve become better with my application technique and I no longer choose those frosty pink hues! And it’s not just make-up; hair products, tanning, body creams, skincare…. I’m like a child on Christmas Eve in the beauty aisles (Or maybe I should be honest and say I’m like ME on Christmas Eve).
However, since becoming a mum, I no longer have the time and endless funds to splurge  on the latest Mac collection. I don’t tend to experiment with colours either as I know what suits me. These days, I only buy products that I know I’m going to use and love. I try not to get swept up by the latest trend that will likely sit gathering dust in my drawer. I have some beloved products that make my life that little bit easier. Products that help me look healthier, groomed and that speed up the getting ready process. And my fellow mummies out there will know how valuable that is!
I’ll never forget opening the door to my health visitor after the birth of my son. (His birth was easy and I recovered well. Unlike the birth of my daughter but that’s another story!) She looked at me in a surprised manner and said ‘I can’t remember the last time I saw a new mum wearing make-up!’ Granted, it was just a bit on concealer and brows but without that I’d feel totally naked! I may as well walk through Piccadilly circus in my underwear!

However, you should never feel that you need to stick to a beauty regime or apply make-up. Do whatever makes you happy. You may be someone who already has naturally beautiful brows and how I envy you! I’m just sharing my own experiences and thoughts and for me, it makes me feel happy and confident.
You, of course, don’t have to be a mum to use these products. These would suit anyone, but they are products for me that I have found to be invaluable when I’m in a rush and I need reliable products that offer consistent results.

I’ve tried to narrow my beauty essentials to my top ten. It wasn’t easy but here’s what made the shortlist!

Concealer

You don’t need me to tell you why you need this! Who remembers those carefree, lazy weekends lie ins to make up for the hectic week, before our little cherubs became human alarm clocks? And whist I’m on this subject, is it only my children who I frequently must coax out of bed with sweet treats during the week when we’re in a rush, but at the weekend they’re ready to party at 6am? What is that about? Anyway, you get my point. Lack of sleep, stress, it all takes its toll and can result in eye bags to rival a Tesco bag for life. Concealer is your best friend. My favourite is Clarins instant concealer (Link) It’s creamy, moisturising and provides a great coverage. It should be noted that using concealer is almost pointless without using corrector as a base, that is, if you’re using it under your eyes. My corrector of choice is Pixi correction concentrate in brightening peach (Link). Think about it: your under-eye shadows tend to be a blueish-purple tone. If you apply a cream colour on top, it will make that colour take an ashy tone. However, if you apply an orange-peach colour on top of that blue tone it will counteract it (orange and blue are opposites on the colour wheel), effectively blocking that colour out before applying concealer. You’ll look like you’ve had a full night’s uninterrupted sleep. You’re welcome.

Bronzer

When you’re feeling tired and drained it shows in your skin. If you’re living in the UK, like me, your natural skin tone is probably on the pale side! Adding bronzer to the high points of the face, making it looked sun kissed, can really lift your features. My favourite bronzer is Chanel bronze universal (Link). It’s a cream bronzer which blends in effortlessly and looks natural. I use a fluffy kabuki brush to apply it. I’m often asked which eye shadow I wear for every day and the truth is I use this on my lids and I blend a darker, powder bronzer in my crease. So, for me, its multi-purpose and quick!

Dry Shampoo

I don’t know what I ever did before dry shampoo! It is possibly the best invention ever. I didn’t even use dry shampoo on my wedding day. What even was life? Yes, I use dry shampoo for the purpose it was intended – to keep my hair fresh in between washes. But I mainly use it to get texture and volume. I spray it through my hair after it has just been blow dried to get it to look bouncy and fuller. My favourite is good old batiste (Link). I use the cherry scent, it smells gorgeously fresh and fruity. I use the volumizing (Link) version in my roots to give it some extra va-va voom! Not only do I get to wash my hair less, it also allows me to extend the time in between colour touch ups, as the light residue masks those pesky roots (I’m blonde). Result!

Body moisturiser

I mentioned in my last post about my battle with eczema and dry skin. I discovered the most intense body moisturiser last year after watching a Pixiwoo video on YouTube. They recommended Eucirin Intensive Lotion (Link) and I’ve probably been through one bottle per month ever since. This lotion isn’t anything fancy. It comes in a rather clinical looking clunky bottle and there is no scent whatsoever. But this lotion is really something special. It is SO nourishing, the most moisturising body product I have ever used. It keeps my skin incredibly soft. It was a god send on holiday, being in and out of the water and sunshine. It leaves a silky film on the skin, making it look just as good as it feels. It gives that sheen to the legs that you see on celebrities on the red carpet, but without the shimmer. If you have dry skin, you’re really going to love this.

Body wash

Despite what you may think if you follow me on Instagram, I don’t get the time to go for baths very often. I love to have an invigorating shower in the morning to wake me up. I don’t get very long before I have a stampede of children (actually 2 but it sounds like 10) outside the door calling on me to pour them some Cheerios – so I need to be quick! I have recently fallen completely in love with Radox feel lively scent touch body wash in wild peony and lychee (Link). Its tender freshness and fruitiness wakes me up and leaves me smelling beautiful for hours after. You could easily skip body fragrance. It’s cheap and I buy in bulk when it’s on offer.

Hair

I’m often asked how I style my hair. I have used my beloved BaByliss big hair (Link) to style my hair for years. This is basically a brush and hairdryer in one and it makes achieving a sleek, bouncy, blow dry that you can only usually get from the salon easy peasy. Anyone can use it; the tool does all the hard work for you. The key is to blast your hair with a hairdryer first and leave it a little damp. This does not work on wet hair! I dry my hair so it’s around 70% dry. Then I section my hair off with a clip and dry the rest in layers using this. I simply don’t have the time to be drying my hair for hours on end and this makes a somewhat tiresome job quick and effective.

Deodorant

Rushing around in the morning to get the children ready can often feel like the hardest part of the day. It’s without a doubt my most stressful time, no matter how organised I am. I’ll spend ages getting Sofia’s hair into a sleek bun that’s going to last the full day at school and then five minutes later Leo’s on top of her play fighting in a heap of hair grips. When I only have one child, it’s a walk in the park, but together? Its mayhem! My point is, stress and rushing around is a sweaty business. I use Mitchem Ultimate 48 hour protection in pure fresh (Link). It leaves me feeling very fresh and smelling of lemon drops all day. It’s the best.

Lip balm

If I was going into the Jungle, lip balm would be my one luxury item. I cannot bear the feeling of tight/dry lips, it’s like torture. I am totally addicted to the stuff and my sister jests that I leave a trail of it wherever I go. I have one in my handbag, in my car, beside the sofa, by my bed and I have back-ups. Even my back-ups have backs ups. The best lip balm of all time is Lanolips banana balm (Link). It is intensely moisturising and tastes gorgeous. I love that I still have residue on my lips in the morning after applying a generous layer before bed. Apply a lush lip scrub (my favourite is popcorn) and then whack this over the top and your lips will be soft and kissable for days!

Eye cream

There is no better feeling than removing your make up at the end of a long day and applying a rich cream under your tired eyes. I have used Kiehl’s creamy eye treatment in avocado (Link) for years. It takes a bit of warming up to blend it in but it feels wonderful to apply and works as a good base for applying concealer on top (corrector first! *thumbs up emoji* for those who were concentrating above!)

Facial tan

Applying a little colour to my face works wonders for my complexion. I really don’t rock the pale look and I don’t think I have tried since 2003. It really makes me look healthier and more awake. I apply a dark tan to my face once a week such as Xen-Tan Dark lotion absolute lux (Link) and I top it up every second or third night with a subtler colour such as L’Oréal overnight tanning elixir serum (Link). If you’re not a confident tanner choose the latter. It’s very easy to apply and gives a light, but noticeable colour and can be applied after your skin care regime. I like to apply it with a brush. Real techniques have some fabulous tools. My favourite for tanning is this one. The body beauty blender (Link) from real techniques also gives a flawless application.

Pop your recommendations below if you think there’s an undiscovered gem out there just waiting to be popped into my basket. Let’s help each other out. Share your secrets and give yourself a pat on the back. You’re doing great Mama.

Make your bedroom a haven

10 / 7 / 171 / 3 / 18

FullSizeRender - Copy (10)

I love my bedroom. Located at the very top of my house, as it was an attic conversion, it’s a little haven of tranquillity to retreat to at the end of a hectic day. The windows look out above the rooftops of the surrounding houses and I feel somewhat in my own little piece of heaven.

I designed the layout which was going to work best for us. We had a great size to work with and the result was more than I could have possibly wished for. The bedroom of my dreams. One evening per week, I like to treat myself to some pampering. I have a long bubble bath, hair and face masks, do my nails and then I do my weekly tanning. They’re usually tanning Thursdays, preparing me for the weekend ahead. I like to light some candles in my bedroom afterwards, watch some TV and relax up there completely alone whilst the kids are asleep and my husband has peace downstairs to watch Narcos.

To be able to have a special place to relax, it’s important to keep on top of keeping your bedroom clean and tidy. You won’t enjoy that time if your husband’s socks are strewn across the floor! If you need some tips and advice to create that beauteous bedroom then this is the blog post for you!

Make your bed a statement

Big beds are on trend! Whether you choose a bedstead or a divan, you can give your bed the ‘wow factor’ by choosing a sumptuous base or a huge eye-catching headboard. If possible, have your bed in the centre of the room facing you as you walk in. It should be your main focal point. Our bed is the Elise in French Grey. Our latest addition is this gorgeous Morris bench from House of Brissi. There’s currently 20% off too!

FullSizeRender - Copy (10)

You can create layers to make your bed look inviting as well as beautiful. Drape a throw over it. I love to mix textures here, so if you have some sparkly cushions, I’d choose a luxurious faux fur throw to contrast this. If you have it all glitzy it can become a bit too much. You want your bed to look comfortable too! Choose a bedding that compliments your bedroom theme. Try and stick to a palette of colours that appeal to you and mix well. I’m a huge fan of calming neutrals, especially in the bedroom. Choose silvers, greys, beiges, golds, creams. No matter what colour you opt for, crisp white bedding will always work well. I love this gorgeous Next bedding but it has since been discontinued despite its huge popularity! Bring it back Next!

FullSizeRender - Copy (9)

Try and look for bedding with the highest thread count. Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads per inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the bedding. A good sheet will tend to be numbered between 200 – 800, but you can buy over 1,000! Have you ever wondered why the beds are so comfortable in hotels? They tend to use the highest thread counts. This includes pillow cases too!

If you’re putting your bedding on straight from the packet, remember to iron out those awful crease lines where it has been folded. They’re my pet peeve! Ironing your bedding is a tedious job, so I do it when its already on the duvet! I remember watching the presenter doing this on 60-minute makeover and I thought GENIUS! I simply plug the iron into the socket behind my bedside tables and lightly run over it to keep it looking fresh.

FullSizeRender - Copy (16)

I do love a good puffy duvet, and beautifully laundered bedding makes the whole thing feel and look special. I also like to give it a quick spritz of some linen spray. I also  spray my pillows with This works deep sleep pillow spray. It leaves the most relaxing, delicate lavender scent in its trail and I swear by it, it really helps me sleep. (The plus version is even better!)

FullSizeRender - Copy (11)

You want to look forward to slipping into the sheets at night. Isn’t it funny how the one thing we hated doing as children, becomes one of life’s simple pleasures in adulthood?

Buy for the biggest sized bed you can. One of our biggest regrets is buying king sized when we had plenty room for a super king! On the weekends when are rudely awakened by two excitable children who insist on jumping in beside up to watch Paw Patrol at 6.30am, we always grumble to each other in a fog of sleep ‘why didn’t we buy the Super King?’ Do not buy a smaller bed just because it’s a little cheaper – instead think about all that stretching out you can do when being forced to watch Cbeebies at dawn! Priceless.

Choose a good quality mattress

I remember reading a quote which said
‘Invest your money in your shoes and your mattress, because if you’re not in one, you’re in the other’.
How true! When we chose a mattress for our brand-new bedroom, I knew that I wanted to spend and invest in comfort and a good night’s sleep. We went to our local Next Home store on a quiet afternoon and made sure we could properly try out all that they had to offer. We decided on the Sealy 2200 Pocket Hybrid Mattress. I cannot begin to describe how comfortable it is.
It’s how I imagine being cocooned in a marshmallow and floating on a cloud might feel like!
Going to bed is like coming home. No matter where I lay my head, nothing compares to my own bed.

Soft lighting

Lighting is key to creating a relaxing atmosphere in the evenings. Do you ever notice when you’re out at night, there are people are relaxing in their homes with their ‘big’ lights on? I want to scream ‘put some lamps on instead and create some atmosphere!’ Matching lamps on both sides of the bed finishes off that statement as you walk into the room. You can also install a dimmer so that if you do choose to use your main light in the evenings, you can still have it on low and keep the tone of the room soft. A statement chandelier is perfect for the bedroom. I have the ever-popular Venetian chandelier also from Next.

Soft Furnishings

A bedroom just isn’t complete without the little details such as soft rugs and cushions. Have a soft fluffy rug beside your bed to sink your toes into on those frosty winter mornings and bundle some cushions of differing sizes and textures onto your bed to add character. Choose beautiful curtains to fit with your theme such as crushed velvet and always have black out blinds. What a difference this has made to the quality of my sleep.

FullSizeRender - Copy (18)

My black out blinds, made especially for Velux windows are by vale blinds and they are completely black out. My husband falls, without fail, at least twice a week during the night when going to the bathroom because he can’t see a thing! I’ve never fallen, what does that tell you? Slow and steady wins the race!

Scent

Oh, how I adore it when my house is filled with sweet fresh aromas. I have spent a lot of money on achieving this. I have a Scentsy wax warmer in every bedroom, living room and hallways. I recently bought an oil diffuser too! I like to use different scents on different floors so that my nose doesn’t become used to it and you get a pleasant surprise as you come up stairs. Change your wax melts every two days as whilst the wax may still be there, the scent will be all but gone. In my bedroom I choose softer fragrances such as more floral and sophisticated notes to help me relax. Choose candles specifically for your bedroom that have names such as clean cotton and soft blanket. My very favourite candle for my bedroom is white tea by yankee candle. It is divine. It smells like your favourite spa! This one below is also perfect for a bedroom with the delicate scent of grapefruit and peonies (how apt)  Bee Happy by Katie Loxton.

How to make your skin glow

10 / 5 / 171 / 3 / 18

FullSizeRender - Copy (8)
I really didn’t think I would be writing about this so soon after setting up my brand-new blog. However, since building up enough confidence to show you my face on my daily insta stories, I’ve been asked so many questions about my skin and make up.
I am by no means a skin care expert. I have simply invested time in reading skin care blogs and watching beauty gurus on YouTube in my quest for smooth skin. As a child, I suffered terribly with eczema and spent a large part of my childhood hiding my skin and hated people looking at me. Thankfully, I grew out of my eczema in my early teenage years and although I still use steroid creams from time to time to keep it at bay, I have been left with very dry skin.
I am constantly looking for hydrating serums, creams and oils for both the face and body, in the hope that I can make my skin plump and quenched. Within your beauty regime, I’m a firm believer that you should invest your money in quality skin care and good foundation. Everything else can be scrimped upon. That expensive Tom Ford lipstick you bought won’t look good if your foundation just isn’t sitting right! If you have a good canvas, everything that you choose to decorate it with has the potential to look wonderful! I plan to write a much more in-depth blog about my skincare routine soon, but the purpose of this is talk about The Glow. As a dry skin sufferer, matte skin is not for me. Anything that makes my thirsty skin look like it’s had a good drink is for me! Follow my key steps and no matter what your skin type, your skin will be glowing for days!
Firstly, you need to know where you want the glow. You want the high points of your face to shine, such as cheekbones (all the way up the orbital bone), the bridge of your nose and if you’re really going all out, you can also dab some highlight onto the top of the shoulders and collar bone. The key is blending. Let there be no obvious end to the glow, fade it out so that it becomes part of your skin, not sitting on top. A beauty blender is your best friend for this job. You may want to matte down the shine on the forehead, between the brows and nose with a powder such as Rimmel Stay Matte.

EXFOLIATE
If you are on a quest to achieve that radiant glow from your skin, you must exfoliate. No matter what expensive products you layer on top of your face, if the skin beneath is dull or dry, nothing will look good. When old skin cells build on the surface, it can leave it looking rough. These cells will clog your pores and cause blemishes and can result in excess oil being produced. Oily skin is not glowy skin. It is completely futile to moisturise your flaky skin if you have skipped this essential step. The moisturiser will simply glide over those loose flaps of skin, pushing them down temporarily. Exfoliating will rid these pesky flaps! Aim to exfoliate twice a week to leave your skin fresh and healthy. There is a plethora of products on the market for this. These will generally be physical exfoliators – the ones full of tiny beads which buff at the skin or chemical exfoliators. Chemical exfoliators are not as scary as they sound. These work by using chemicals to aid cell turnover such as fruit enzymes. I use both. I use the lush cup o’ coffee twice a week. If you’re a coffee lover, you’ll be in Starbucks scented HEAVEN. It invigorates the skin with its rich aroma and is packed full of finely milled ground coffee beans which gently buff the skin into silky perfection. I also use Pixi glow tonic every other night. This has been made famous by Caroline Hirons. She is the skincare queen. If she recommends a product, you know its good. The tonic is an exfoliating toner that firms the skin. It contains glycolic acid which helps to brighten skin and remove dead cells leaving the skin radiant.

MOISTURISE
Now that you’ve exfoliated and removed all that dead skin, it’s time to moisturise. Choose a hydrating moisturiser. As I have dry skin, I want my skin to feel plumped and intensely nourished. I use different products in the morning and more intense products for night time. I love nothing more that slathering on rich oils before bedtime and I like to still feel some product on my face in the morning. I can’t bear to wake up with my skin feeling tight and uncomfortable. My recommendations are my daytime creams that provide a nourished base for make-up. I’m going to include recommendations here for both high end and low end. I bought a decadent golden tub of Estee lauder revitalising supreme + at Christmas and I’ve never looked back. It makes my skin feel like velvet. So beautifully nourishing. This cream is GORGEOUS. Much kinder on the purse strings is my belovedAvene skin recovery cream. This is specially formulated for those with very dry skin. It literally melts into the skin and leaves it so soft and smooth and it works fantastically under make up

FullSizeRender - Copy (8)

PRIME
There are so many options when it comes to primer and it completely depends on your skin type. If you’re oily you’re going to opt for something mattifying for your make up to cling to. Smash box photo finish is an all-round good one. Smoothing out the skin and filling in your pores allowing foundation to sit beautifully on top. I prefer to use a pearlescent product to give my skin that extra hydration boost! Mac strobe cream was the first one I discovered. It really packs a punch, providing the dullest of skins with a glow as it enhances the effect of light on the skin with its pearlescent particles. However, L’Oreal have a dupe for this in the form of their Magic lumi light infusing liquid facial primer. I just wish it came in a larger bottle as I go through a lot of this iridescent goodness. But it helps build up the Boots Advantage points and boy do I go to town on those!

FOUNDATION
Choosing the correct foundation is so important. Dependent on your skin type, formulations that work well on one, may not sit so well with the other. If your foundation doesn’t look good then nothing else will. I have lots of different foundations I like and narrowing it down to my favourites is somewhat challenging as I have quite a stash! Let’s focus on what you can get for your hard earned cash. My absolute favourite foundation of all time is Laura Mercier silk crème. It gives a flawless coverage and really makes your skin look incredible. I reach for this on special occasions and nights out. Or if I’m having a bad skin day as it hides a multitude of sins! It’s the perfect hangover foundation. For every day, I absolutely love Bourjois 123 perfect CC cream. It called a CC cream, but to me it’s a foundation. It just makes the skin look healthy. Don’t forget that Chanel own Bourjois and a lot of their products are very similar, just very different price points!

CREAM BLUSH
Blusher is the one make-up step you should never skip! It can take your skin from looking lacklustre and flat to perky and healthy at the sweep of a brush! My face needs blush. I’d never look complete without it! Powder blushes do have a place in my life. I love Benefit Coralista and Mac Warm Soul (both give a stunning warm sheen) but Stilla convertible colour blushis a game changer! It’s cream blush and therefore looks more natural and dewy. It’s like magic in a pot. It gives the skin a tint of colour on the cheeks that really makes them pop and appear hydrated. My colour is gerbera. It gives a dose of peachy pink goodness to the cheeks making the skin look lit from within. I adore it. I wouldn’t like to count how many I’ve been through!

HIGHLIGHT
Now for the biggie. Highlighter. Oh, how I adore a highlighted cheekbone. I have a drawer full of them. But the dust is gathering on my unused stash and I have two firm favourites which I rarely cheat on. I have dabbled, purely due to curiosity, but I know where my bread is buttered and I always return to these gems. Firstly, I’ll start with powder highlight. I feel that powder highlight looks best in photography. If I’m going out in the evening I will pretty much always opt for this option. The Balm Mary Lou-manizer is perfection. The champagne glow is so intense and will make you cheek bones pop like nothing else. You can put it on lightly with a small brush if you don’t want to look too done, but there’s no denying that this highlight packs a punch. Here is a photo of me wearing it recently at a wedding:

I saved the best for last. Are you ready for this? This product is as close to life changing as any cosmetic possibly can be. I’ve only had this product in my life for about six months, but those six months have been richer for it! The Iconic London illuminator is contained in a little glass bottle that comes with a pipette. I’ve maybe used it 100 times and the amount inside the bottle has barely been dented as you need so little of the product. This stuff has the ability to make you glow like a little angel on the dance floor. It’s just as gorgeous in day time as it is in the evening. It comes in three colours, I use original, which gives a golden glow. If you’re paler skinned, go for shine. I believe glow would be used to give a bronzed glow to the body or your face if your dark skinned. You can also mix it in with your foundation to make the formula more dewy.

Just look at that glow. I didn’t use a flash here so just imagine how it could look in photos. It’s like liquid metal. The photo below shows that it doesn’t have to look over intense either. Excuse the resting bitch face pose but it was necessary to catch the angle I wanted!

I hope that’s answered some of your questions and feel free to pop your comments below. I would love to know what your favourite products are to get that glow factor.

Good luck and get glowing!

My top 5 home gadgets

9 / 28 / 171 / 3 / 18

FullSizeRender

We all love a gadget, right? Designed to make our lives that little bit easier and constantly reinventing themselves with more sleek and clever designs. I rely heavily on a few of these in my home. Without them, I think I’d be rather lost. You don’t need to spend a fortune either. There are some gems out there that perform amazingly well without breaking the bank. I’ve narrowed it down to my top five!

If you would like to purchase any of the below, simply click on the heading and it will direct you straight to the website.

Shark liftaway NV800UK

IMG_8149

The best vacuum in town. If you follow me on Instagram and watch my daily insta stories, you’ll already know of my love for this product. I understand why some might be wary of this brand; their products seemed to explode onto the market from nowhere and suddenly we were bombarded with bloggers and instagrammers alike raving about this beast. People proclaimed to be throwing their Dysons in the skip and we, as a home loving community, found a new love for carpet tracks that this unique vacuum provides in abundance. GOALS. Every time I post a photo of those delightful little tracks I log on to countless messages from people excitedly tagging their friends and long-suffering partners with photos of their carpet goals! Now believe me when I say that this product not only lives up to the hype, it exceeds the hype! This vacuum has a suction like nothing else you’ll have experienced before. So strong, that my husband unknowingly sucked up a perfectly white pair of my daughter’s ankle socks which had been abandoned on the carpet. I used to happily vacuum Leo’s little rug in his bedroom. It’s necessary as there are usually some remains of Ritz crackers embedded in there! However, the first time I naively attempted this with the shark, it literally ate the rug! I managed to stop it in time to rescue the rug, luckily, and I’ve never made that same mistake again! My point is, you need this vacuum in your life if you have carpets and especially if you have ‘cracker loving’ children (or children that are just crackers). You simply won’t believe the dirt it will pull up from your seemingly clean carpets. But what I love most about my shark is how it makes my carpets look. They have very thick, deep piles and whilst my isense carpets are still beautiful and silky, my Invictus carpets have flattened terribly in ‘high traffic’ areas. My shark pulls the pile up to make it bouncy again, almost like it’s had a little blow dry! After a quick whizz around with this, once again I see footprints in my carpet which were long gone due to flattening. The bouncy effects don’t last, but if I do this daily it keeps it looking wonderful and new again You can also use this on hardwood floors and tiles, adjusting at the click of a switch. Have I raved enough? If you take one thing from this post, let it be that you need a shark in your life. For those of you who can’t be doing with dragging a cord around (it’s a pain but you get used to it) they also have a new cordless model IF250UK  ( 10% discount code – peonycc10 ) and whilst its suction does not quite rival its predecessor, it gives it a damn good run for its money! It also stores like a pro, it bends in half and slides into the smallest of spaces.

Both, of course, come with attachments to vacuum the stairs, pet hair, car, ledges – you name it. Genius.

Karcher WV5 Plus window vacuum cleaner
I’ve not given this ingenious product the recognition it deserves on my Instagram page; however, I use it all the time and I love it just as much as when I bought it two years ago. This is a battery operated handheld vacuum that uses an innovative cleaning system to leave your windows sparkling and completely streak free. This nifty little vacuum sucks away the moisture and dirt from your windows into its tank so there’s no need to wipe or buff. Even in sunshine I don’t find a single streak! Perfect for parents of sticky handed toddlers who are always attracted to those shiny patio doors. Now the instructions will tell you to use their detergent, which is good, however, I prefer to fill a bowl with warm soapy water, clean my windows with a cloth and then let the karcher work on whatever’s left. As a child I used to love watching window cleaners magically scrape away at soapy shop windows, leaving it completely spotless and shiny, was it just me who did that? So I find it overly satisfying having the same effect in my own home. Don’t stop at the windows, use it in your car, shower screen, oven door, tiles and mirrors. You can even use it to suck up spillages with ease. What more could you ask?

JML Whizz mop

mop.jpg

It’s one of my most frequently asked questions: How do you get your floor tiles so shiny? The secret is all in this mop and it’s cheap! This mop has a 360 degree spinning head so you can pump the excess water out the mop before it touches your floor. Gone are the days of manually wringing out your mop which is time consuming and cumbersome. This does all the work for you with the pump of a foot pedal. I fill the bucket with boiling water, a small dash of floor cleaner and a capful of zoflora (my favourite scents are bluebell woods and twilight garden). I then pump almost all the water out the mop so it is left only slightly damp. THAT is the secret. Damp. Never wet. Streaky floors will be a distant (bad) memory. This method will also leave your floors smelling heavenly. I’d love to tell you that this product is beautifully made, however with it being cheap, it’s not the most durable. I will admit I’ve been through maybe 3 of these over the past 4 years which, considering I use it daily, isn’t too bad. But I always keep my receipt and return it to Argos when the foot pump gives up (perhaps I’m a bit over zealous with the pumping?) and get a shiny new one. I also have the Shark Klick n’ Flip steam mop which has minimal smearing. I use this once a week to give my floor a deep clean and it is by far superior to any of the steam mop I’ve had in the past.

IMG_8155 - Copy

Hand Held Steam Cleaner
Now I don’t have a fancy model. You don’t need to spend too much at all. The main benefit of these is the power of steam cleaning without the additional need for any need for chemicals. They’re great if you have a baby or young family as they blast away germs and bacteria with the power of steam. They do a fabulous job of cleaning the oven, tile grout and those niggly hard to clean areas around your shower base. The one job I really love to use this for is that impossible to reach area between the spindles of my bannister and the wall which collects endless mounds of fluff. The high-pressure steam is so powerful it literally gusts it all away effortlessly. Much easier than trying to wriggle through the spindles with a baby wipe!

Ninja kitchen Food Processor NN100UK

IMG_8152

Now this is the anomaly of my post, as it’s not a cleaning gadget, but I couldn’t not include it! This nifty device is really something special. It’s truly versatile and you can knock up an array of tempting dishes in the kitchen with its help. You can of course make soups, sauces and marinades but we love to use it for smoothies, slushes and most importantly – cocktails! My husband has a real talent for making cocktails. So much so, that I seriously grudge paying £7 in a bar for something which is totally substandard to the homemade goodness I’ve become accustomed to. We have tried with numerous gadgets to get the perfect smooth, slushy ice consistency that is a delightful daquiri. We could never get it right….. until we got this. It makes them to absolute perfection. We’ve tried mango, strawberry and banana versions – all dangerously delicious! During the hot summer months, (days!) we experimented with various ingredients in mastering the perfect smoothie and were always delighted with the results. Perhaps you would like a blog post of our recipes for our favourites?

Pinkpeony10 will give you 10% off this too!

IMG_8154

So, there you have it. If you have these bad boys in your life, you’ll have an extra little spring in your step, trust me! I’d love to know, what are your must have gadgets in your home?

How I keep a tidy home

9 / 24 / 171 / 3 / 18

IMG_7867

So, its undoubtedly my most commonly asked question – just how DO you keep your house so tidy with two young children? It’s been impossible to answer before because where would I begin? Instagram is great for giving short and snappy answers to simple questions but it has always been in the back of my mind that one day I could answer this frequently asked question in a detailed and honest blog post. I’ll share my top ten tips to keep on top of it all and make sure that your house is always inviting and clean.

Firstly, I’ll start off by saying there is no magic answer or secret. It’s hard work keeping on top of household chores, cleaning, washing, ironing, vacuuming, cooking, organising…. the list is endless. If you’re not someone who is naturally tidy then it will always seem to be on top of you and it will take a real lifestyle change to make that shift. Being motivated is key! I cannot relax in the evening knowing my sink is full of dirty dishes and my goal is always to have my home looking clutter free and clean by 7pm. I’m a busy mum. With a Shopkin obsessed six-year-old (Sofia) and Lego crazy three-year-old (Leo) I constantly feel as though I’m tidying up and that I don’t have a moment to myself. So, when the kids go to bed its finally my time to relax and have some well-deserved ‘me time’. For me there is nothing more decadent that being snuggled up on the sofa with my husband, uninterrupted and watching some Netflix! I don’t want to waste that time in the evening cleaning and tidying and that’s my motivation to stay on top of things during the day.

Also, I’m very fortunate that my husband, like me, loves a tidy home. We certainly weren’t always this way – if only you saw our first flat when we were teenagers! We used to sleep in orange patterned sofa bed in our living room. Oh, and there was a delightful red swirly carpet! But having children made me nest and strive to always have a clean, spacious and comfortable home and I guess that’s rubbed off on him! We’re a real partnership and in the evenings, when the house seems to be at its most chaotic, one of us tends to bath the children whilst the other has a blitz of the messy, post -meal time kitchen and toy filled living room so that when it comes to the kid’s bedtime, we can relax. In our home, we often don’t get to have a conversation during the day without the kids squabbling over the iPad, asking for food or shouting, ‘Mummy come and see what we’ve done!’ So, the evenings are very important to us to make time for each other and reflect on the day.

I have certain chores that I do daily, without fail. Bigger jobs can often wait until the weekend such as scrubbing the bathrooms (my worst job), cleaning the windows and washing the bedding, to name a few. I’d also like to add that weekends are family time for us. I try and get these jobs done early in the morning so that the rest of the day is free. Particularly Sundays, there’s nothing better than going out a big forest walk with our muddy wellies and a flask of hot tomato soup in tow, to then coming home to a cosy, tidy home and a roast ham Sunday feast! It’s my very favourite time of the week. Leo can polish off an adult sized portion and it’s such a joy to watch him eat! Anyway, I digress. I’ve prioritised what I think is key to a tidy home, which I think equals a tidy mind.

1.) Always go to bed with a tidy kitchen. If my entire house was messy and in need of some TLC I would always start with the kitchen. The kitchen is the heart of our home where we tend to gravitate towards from meal times (we save the dining room for special occasions) to homework tasks. I also load the dishwasher at night ready to quickly to put away in the morning. I wipe down my worktops, clean my hob (it’s always dirty after dinner) and most importantly I have it clutter free. Everything should have its place in your home. Make your kitchen a place that invites you to cook a delicious meal for the family and try not to clutter it with letters on work surfaces and the kid’s homework strewn across the table! Put your bread away out of sight in the breadbin and have your worktops spacious and easy to wipe down. For me, having my kitchen floor sparkling is a must. As I have white floors my kitchen doesn’t feel clean until they’re done and the floors are always the last thing I do. It’s a joy to wake up to a bright and clean kitchen and will encourage you to clean away the breakfast mess to maintain it throughout the day! Also, before I go to bed I fill my sink with boiling water and a touch of Zoflora. The fresh, sharp aroma fills the whole house! Their new lemon zest scent is perfect for this!

IMG_7870

2.) Make your bed as soon as get up in the morning. It may feel like a chore at first but it becomes second nature once you get into the routine of it. How much more inviting will your bed look after a long day at the office with fluffed pillows and a puffy duvet? Make sure your clothes go straight into the wash hamper and avoid any temptation to throw clothes on the floor or pile up on top of your dressing chair! Your bedroom is the one room you should be able to relax and switch off from your daily stress. You deserve it! Create a calming and beautiful haven to retreat to at the end of a long day is a must.

IMG_7863

3.) Vacuum daily! You may not need to do this is if you don’t have children but I vacuum at least once a day. I also have thick carpets and my Shark NV800UKT (the best vacuum on Earth) has such a strong suction that it pulls up the pile making them look bouncy as well as clean. If you do this daily, the vacuuming will be become less of a chore if you don’t let the mess build up! And who doesn’t love some vacuum tracks? To me it says luxury!
4.) Have a place for the toys and never allow clutter to build! My children both have clever toy solutions from The Great Little Trading Company. Their furniture can be expensive but in my view, it is worth it. They have storage to fit any bedroom and have an abundance of pretty solutions to make it look aesthetically pleasing! Also, don’t buy until they have an offer. They always have an offer on the go and if you open a new account you will be offered an introductory code! You can also buy cheaper alternatives in IKEA. I store my children’s toys in compact foldable boxes which can easily be carried around the house dependent on where they want to play. I always encourage them to help tidy things away when they get bored and this is easy to do even with toddlers when things are getting chucked into a box! My daughter will often do this without being asked as she’s older and used to helping. Of course, it’s important to allow them to play and be messy children too, but it’s always a good routine to get into of helping with the tidying up in the end. If you don’t have room in the children’s bedrooms you could invest in a stylish ottoman to keep in your living room or hallway. No-one will know the brightly coloured plastic contents lurking inside. You could even pop some pillows on the top of it in the evenings to make it into a stylish little bench.

IMG_7871

5.) Organise what you need the night before. I always leave the kids uniforms and outfits laid out the night before right down to their underwear and matching accessories! Mornings for me are the most stressful time of the day and not having to scramble through their wardrobes helps massively! I also organise their school/nursery bags and prepare their snacks ready to grab in the morning. I have a family planner on our kitchen wall with all our important dates, homework and P.E reminders so we’re never in a panic about things we’ve forgotten (This is when I usually create mess!) I also have a mail storage box and notice boards where I can quickly put letters and reminders. This has made a huge difference to our lives in terms of being organised and not leaving the house is a whirlwind of chaos each morning.
6.) Do your laundry daily. With two young children with a love of spaghetti bolognese and a husband who does a physical job, our laundry basket is always full. I’d also like to add that both the kids know to put their clothes straight inside at night! Laundry can very quickly build up in the hamper and I find that although it’s never empty (life’s goal) it is at least manageable if you keep on top of it daily. I like to put a wash on in the evening as I hate hanging clothes up inside the house and I could count on two hands how many times I’ve gotten to hang it outside this summer! So, I hang the washing up before bed so that it doesn’t annoy me during the day and it usually always dry in the morning ready to be ironed or folded away.
7.) Do those little jobs that are needing done straight away. This may seem simple but if you leave all those little things until later they will mount up and become a burden. For example, if your work tops need a polish, do it now! Don’t wait. It’s amazingly satisfying how much time this will save in the evenings, like I said less time cleaning, more time for Netflix! It’s helpful to have those commonly used items accessible. Duplicate your favourites so that you don’t run out. Zoflora, toilet bleach, anti-bacterial wipes and glass cleaner are essentials. I like to store them on all levels of the house to I’m not constantly running back and forth.
8.) Don’t neglect the small details. Plump your cushions at night before bed, fold away your blankets and straighten out your curtains. I even put the remote control out of sight! Your whole mood will be better when you wake up to a home that you want to spend time in and look forward to coming back to in the evenings.
9.) Get rid of things that you don’t need. From the catalogue you had sent through but haven’t had time to look at, to the neglected children’s toys they no longer play with. If you don’t need it, it’s not being used and is generally bugging you as it doesn’t have a home then it’s time to get rid. Sell it on eBay, recycle it or take it to a charity shop. A clutter free home is the aim and will make tidying and cleaning a much easier and quicker job.

IMG_7875

10.) Plan your daily clean and tidy up at a time that works best for your family. After I drop Sofia at school, I take my Leo out straight after. He has the most energy to burn in the morning after his breakfast. We go to the park, playgroup, soft play and I try to tire him out for lunch time. When we arrive home, he likes to relax on the sofa and watch some Peppa Pig. Whilst her cheeky piggy antics keep him entertained I quickly do as much as I can! Perhaps when your little one naps you’ll have the opportunity too. Although, when my children were babies I wanted nothing more than a well-deserved rest and a cup of hot tea that I could finish during nap time! My children really miss each other during the day so come home time from school they usually go off to play upstairs for a while and this gives me another chance for a quick blitz without having the kid’s arms wrapped around my feet and to prepare dinner. Note, I usually have a fifteen minute window before the squabbling begins!

Every family has different schedules and dynamics and your routine will be unique to your own circumstances, do what works for you! Try not to find excuses not to get things done. The more you get into the routine of maintaining your tidy home, the easier it will become. Reward yourself when it’s all finished in the evening with something you enjoy. For me, it’s an ice-cold glass of prosecco! Ah I can taste it already! Happy cleaning everyone and good luck.
